Professor Shelton Brown is Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health , University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (Brownsville Regional Campus). He will visit ACERH (UQ) for several weeks in June 2006. His research interests are mainly in the economics of health. His research includes empirical work on the effects of managed care on hospitals, including an analysis of whether the prevalence of managed care insurance causes area hospitals to become more technically efficient using a stochastic frontier model. He has developed a theoretical model of spatial competition to examine how hospitals compete in an urban setting. These models include public, for-profit, and nonprofit hospitals. He has also examined physician behavior under various incentive schemes. With Luke Connelly, he has recently been working on private health insurance markets in Australia under the lifetime cover scheme. Several joint papers on this topic have been published and another is in press. In addition, his recent work has involved a focus on diabetes and quantitative methods for adjusting for endogeneity and selection effects in studies of diabetes and labour market outcomes.
